Laurie and I went on our yearly trip to Lansing and to the Doll Show held there. It was about the same as years past, without the usual paper doll lady, which I missed tremendously. I have a collection of paper dolls and I usually add to it at this doll show. I did find some small Wizard of Oz dolls to add to my Wizard of Oz collection.
I have a Dorothy with basket and Toto, The Wicked Witch, Wicked Witch from the East and Daisy Munchkin. These, along with the others I have, make up the full cast of characters available. Now if I could just find where I put them in my work room...I've been cleaning and re-organizing and have moved everything around. I know I saw them recently, but I packed them into a storage item (I can't remember it it is a tote, a decorated hat box, an altered wood crate, I have no idea what I put this collection in...Great.
The better deals came from the antique mall we hit after the Doll Show. I had tremendously good luck there. I found two metal doll houses-both very reasonably priced and in remarkably good shape. I will be using them as displays for my miniatures. We also found a small child's table and chairs set with a fold out metal drawer. The set was 12 bucks. I found several very inexpensive doll furniture pieces-a couple of which I will be using for room boxes, a couple for the doll house I will be creating for myself at some point. In the mean time, I will make a mold of them and then cast as many as I want of the same item for future doll house projects. The same for the chair I found for .99 cents. I will make a pattern from it and make as many as I want from that pattern.
The two modern/Scandinavian style bureaus or dressers-whichever way you choose to say it-will look great in the room boxes I have sketches for.
I did buy one piece of jewelry-a cheap but utterly stunning cocktail ring. It is varing shades of pink and is quite lovely for $5.
Then we were off to Goodwill, where I bought 5 bars of all natural homemade soap: Goats milk, Rose Blossom, Spearmint and Bran, Lavender, and Sandalwood. Luscious! I hope Anthony will like one (or more) of them. If he does, I'll be making our own soap for him from now on.
Laurie found yarn and a small round case which will be perfect for a doll display or a carry case for a little doll and clothes.
But the very best part of the day didn't cost a dime.
It was the time I spent with my dear friend, whom i have missed more than she will ever know.
Since Laurie has been busy working at the quilt shop and I have been busy working on Little Shop, we haven't seen each other in a long time. There was a time we actually went a whole week without even talking to each other-not even a minute on the phone.
That's just unheard of.
We see each other all the time. Three, four, times a week. We talk to each other all the time. Usually every day. To not talk for a week-with out one of us having our jaw wired shut or something-would never have been possible in my mind. Yet, it happened. And that's awful. When you are so busy you don't have a second to talk to your loved ones-you are way to busy.
I am making a pledge to myself, never to let that happen again. I need to check my commitments and make sure I have enough time for friends and family too. No matter how important I think what I am doing is-it is not more important than those I love.
