Today was the Little Shop cast and crew party.
I was not there, as the yearly doll show in Lansing was also today. Laurie and I go every year. This is something we do, not only for our personal enjoyment but also for our business. We are doing market research, investigating current trends, devising our plans for the upcoming year based upon what we see and hear at this show.
Tom, and his utterly delightful husband Rob, hosted a lovely brunch for the whole bunch. (I've been to brunch at their home before and it is wonderful!!) The two of them (along with their son, Devin) are charming hosts and I have no doubt everyone had a great time.
After a show there is often a period of let down, which I was concerned the kids might not be aware of and would be taken by surprise if it hit them. So earlier I had sent the cast an e-mail. Here it is:
I just wanted to say a quick thank you to all who participated in the show. I have had a wonderful time getting to know you and will treasure the memories we've shared during this crazy ride.
Most of you know I've worked in youth theatre for many years. I can truthfully say I don't remember a cast I've enjoyed more than you guys. Each one of you has brought something so special and unique to this production. It's wonderful to see each one of you blossom and grow, not only in your roles, but also in your every day life.
Theatre has a way of making "instant" family. You spend hours and hours together working toward a common goal.
Then it's over. And there is a period of adjustment and often a feeling of loss. That's okay. And normal. And temporary. The friendships you've made during this production can last for a lifetime if you want them to. Keep up with each other. Take the time to make a call, send a text, go for coffee. Don't lose touch with each other, just because this show is finished.
And remember: Tom, Jackie, Justine and I have huge plans for this summer. Three shows and an event. You are all cordially invited to audition. And, of course, we will be back again next year...
Our minds are already at work coming up with something fun and fantastic for you then.
You are all delightful and I love you all. Thank you for making Little Shop such a wonderful experience for me!

Well, that e-mail turned out to be pretty accurate for some of the kids, according to Tom. He said some are struggling with the end of the production, and some are even feeling a bit depressed about it. The brunch was so great for the kids! They had a chance to watch the video of the show, sing along with the songs and generally hang out together to share memories and laughs.
