As you can see the savings on cleaners is quite substantial. These cost comparisons came from another website I frequent, but I can't remember which one. Here are some possibilities:
Living Well, Spending Less
The Prairie Homestead
Clean Mama
Here is the recipe I'm using for our Laundry Detergent:
1 cup Borax
1 cup Washing Soda
4.5 oz bar shaved soap-Dr. Bronner's, Ivory, Zote, Fels-Naptha
Blend thoroughly. This batch will yield 32-64 loads.
I made six batches of this, as my bars of Zote were 14.5oz bars. I had an empty container of tide pods which I used to hold this powered laundry detergent. I use a tablespoon per load, as I have a front loader and it requires less soap.
So far the results have been great. Our clothes are clean and fresh smelling. Even my son's clothes (he works on cars and trucks often) come clean with this detergent. I'm quite impressed with the quality of cleaning, and I'm thrilled with the cost!
To make Washing Soda:
Place baking soda in a thick layer on jelly roll pan and bake in 400 degree oven for 1 hour. This turns baking soda into washing soda.
I purchased the large resealable bag of baking soda at Sam's Club and baked it all. After it cooled I returned it to the resealable bag for storage. There are other cleaning recipes that call for washing soda, so I'm not concerned I won't use it all up.
I've been busy this Christmas season making most of the gifts we gave this year. I've received rave reviews on the body butters and lip balms. These were simple and cost effective too. I will be including recipes and instructions for those things in upcoming posts.
This year is a get out of debt, clear out the clutter, live a more fulfilled and happier life with what we have and create those things we need but don't have year. It's a back to basics and those things that are really important year. I hope you will join me for the journey.
