I like a challenge.
When I talked over the set design for 12 Angry Jurors with our very talented director, Paul Connelly, he mentioned the same set piece and design would be used for two up coming shows. Jurors and Once Upon This Island. So we discussed this at length and came up with the idea of a tree, which will look like wood carved flooring. This will be the top of the "cake" we use.
The cake is a standard piece we have used several times in the past. In fact, we were trying to figure out just how many shows we've used this very large piece in. We have lost count. It's a staple in our theatre items. We have a map with directions to put it all back together once it comes apart and a specific place to store it as well. It is a two (or occasionally three) tiered platform, with the top (or center if there are three) piece about 16' across and 10' to 12' wide as it's tapered. The platform is flat at the back and the entire length of the platform, with a very wide (1 1/2 to 2 1/2 ft. wide) step coming out in a circle with the center piece is on top of that-making it look like a two tiered, layered cake. So the thing is enormous and I've painted it way to many times to count.
This time it's going to look like this:

Well, similar anyway. I thought this was the most beautiful floor inlay! Just gorgeous! I am painting this, obviously, and not exactly either-since I never do that. But my design is based upon this look. I think the end result will be quite striking, although I can't even imagine how beautiful this one is in person...This is the top of the "cake".
Our step-which encircles the top layer-will have the four elements from Once Upon This Island on it. These will all be painted in earth tones for the Jurors show, but then I'll paint them over in appropriate colors for Island. Both of these shows will work with this design, as it is quite common for court houses to have elaborate flooring designs-especially in older buildings. And while our show isn't set in the original time frame, it would still likely to be held in an older building.
And Jackie's show is coming along beautifully! She is an amazing actress! I'm so proud of her. She has memorized so many lines, I can't even imagine how she does this...She is putting on a one woman show for an upcoming competition. She will be timed. This will be quite a challenge and an adventure. Jackie cannot have any props that she doesn't use-or she'll be marked down for that. I haven't seen the set yet, so it's hard to come up with the appropriate props and set dressing, but we're working on it.
I'm so excited for her! Jackie has such talent! I really am amazed by her work. The first read through we did, she gave me goosebumps and I had tears in my eyes...And it was just her working her way through the whole show. She wasn't even acting (intentionally). But she's so good, Jackie puts such inflection and emotion in her voice alone, I couldn't help but be caught up in the story and I felt so much for the character...Her acting was coming out anyway, just because Jackie is that talented and professional. Amazing.
I really am in awe. I cannot fathom that kind of talent.
